How deep can the shallow end be, and how steep can a residential pool floor slope?

Shallow-area design depth between 33 and 48 inches. Shallow floor slope not steeper than 1:7. Deep floor slope not steeper than 1:3. The transition point must be at least 33 inches deep and at least 6 feet from the start of the shallow area. A beach or sloping entry may not exceed 1:7.

The geometry of a residential pool floor is governed by ISPSC 807, and the figures are meaningfully different from the public-pool chapter people usually quote. Verified 2026-09-10.

Depth, slope, transition and wall geometry, residential:

  • Shallow area: design water depth at the shallowest point is not less than 33 in and not more than 48 in, measured at design waterline to floor (S-01, ISPSC 807.2).
  • Shallow floor, Point E to Point D: maximum floor slope is not more than 1:7, measured at section (S-04, ISPSC 807.1.1).
  • Deep floor, Point D to Point B: maximum floor slope is not more than 1:3, measured at section (S-05, ISPSC 807.1.3).
  • Point D, shallow to deep: minimum depth at the transition point is not less than 33 in, measured at design waterline to floor (S-06, ISPSC 807.1.2).
  • Point E to Point D: minimum distance from the start of the shallow end is not less than 6 ft, measured at plan (S-07, ISPSC 807.1.2).
  • Pool wall: wall to floor transition point, below design waterline is not less than 33 in, measured at design waterline (S-08, ISPSC 807.3).
  • Offset ledge: maximum ledge width is not more than 8 in, measured at design waterline (S-09, ISPSC 807.3).
  • Beach or sloping entry: maximum slope used as a pool entrance is not more than 1:7, measured at section (B-01, ISPSC 809.6).
  • Steps, benches, swimouts, ladders: must fall outside the minimum diving water envelope, required, measured at section, per figure (D-01, ISPSC 804.1, Tbl 804.1).

SLOPE IS THE ONE THAT GETS QUOTED WRONG. The residential shallow floor may slope up to 1:7. The 1:12 figure in circulation is ISPSC Chapter 4, the public pool chapter. A 1:12 design is not wrong, it is simply not required, and a builder who tells a homeowner the pool must be regraded to reach 1:12 is quoting the wrong chapter.

WHY THE TRANSITION RULE MATTERS ON A SMALL LOT. Point D, where the shallow floor gives way to the deep slope, has to sit at least 33 inches deep and at least 6 feet from the start of the shallow area at Point E. On a narrow yard those two constraints plus the 1:3 deep-slope limit are what actually decide whether a deep end fits at all. They are geometry, not preference, and no amount of design intent moves them.

THE OFFSET LEDGE LIMIT. A ledge at the wall-to-floor transition may not exceed 8 inches wide. This is a drowning-risk rule, not an aesthetic one: a wide submerged ledge in the deep area is a surface a swimmer can land on unexpectedly.

DIVING ENVELOPE. Steps, benches, swimouts and ladders must all fall outside the minimum diving water envelope in ISPSC Table 804.1 where a pool is designed for diving. A bench placed inside that envelope is a structural pass and a safety fail, and it is one of the more common things an audit catches on an otherwise clean plan.

WHAT OMNI BUILDS TO. Shallow depth 36 to 42 inches rather than the full 33 to 48 inch range, because 33 inches reads as a wading pool to an adult and 48 inches is past comfortable standing depth for most people. Shallow floor at 1:8 rather than the 1:7 maximum, and deep floor at 1:3. Point E to Point D at 8 feet rather than the 6 foot minimum. Beach entry at 1:10 rather than 1:7, because a 1:7 beach is slippery underfoot in a way a 1:10 is not. These are Omni standards, not code.
